Sanctuary Trust ‘Durrell’ Tortoise

Sanctuary Trust are delighted and excited that they will feature in the latest Durrell Charity fundraiser as Trustee Debbie Presser along with her husband Richard who is Durrell’s Chef de Gardien have agreed to sponsor a tortoise.

This will help put Jersey’s hidden homeless issue on the map, so to speak, and Sanctuary thought it apt  to be able to use the symbolism of the tortoise with its home on its back to raise awareness, and in doing so link the two causes.

When questioned by Bailiwick Express who are featuring Sanctuary Trust as their partner charity this year Debbie explained, “When we heard about Tortoise Takeover, I immediately thought of the obvious symbolism of the tortoise with its home on its back and the men we support at Sanctuary Trust, who often come to us with their belongings in nothing more than a bag.

“As supporters of both Durrell and Sanctuary Trust, my husband and I felt this was a perfect opportunity to raise awareness about both charities’ respective environmental and social plights.”

General Manager Sarah Tumelty was full of gratitude to the couple, and it is lovely to see try recognition given to generous benefactors.

The Sanctuary Tortoise designed by local artist Lisa MacDonald will be part of the Durrell Tortoise Trail this summer that goes on display in the wild in Jersey from 1 July – 31 August 2023.
